Films with Sri Lankan connect run into Trouble

It wasn't always like this. The critically acclaimed Tamil films like Santosh Sivan's The Terrorist and Mani Ratnam's Kannathil Muthamittal - both dealing with Sri Lankan civil war and conflicts - being often talked about, not for the controversies, but for their themes and portrayal of the subject. But in this age and day, when almost every other movie promo sees PILs filed against it and protests happening on the most random of issues, usually close to the release of the film so that the makers can be arm-twisted, it should come as no surprise that movies that even fleetingly touch upon a Sri Lankan issue, run into troubled waters.

While of late, this has been seen predominantly in Tamil movies, Hindi films, too, have had their share of trouble. Most recently, two films, Kaththi and Pulipaarvai are fighting a court order seeking a stay on their releases based on a petition filed in the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court. The only reason why Vijay’s Kaththi is in trouble is that the producers are linked to Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa. The protestors want the producers to be changed, and have threatened to get a court order banning the release of the film if their demands are not met. Hope these issues will be sorted out soon preventing a huge financial loss for films.
