Soy food reduces breast cancer reoccurrence

A new research done on soy foods has proved that soy foods are beneficial to the women who suffer from breast cancer. Women with breast cancer are advised not to eat soy foods or soy foods supplements during the treatment as it interferes with anti-estrogen treatment, according to old research. But now with the research done by Prof Leena Hilakivi-Clarke, PhD it was found that soy foods actually help in preventing breast cancer reoccurrence.

As the research on mice proved that, genstein (an isoflavin) in soy stimulates the growth of breast cancer cells and disrupts the anti-estrogen treatment.  But the researchers investigated if their previous findings could be explained by changes in tumor immune responses. While T cells can attack tumor cells, other immune cells can disable the ability of these T cells to recognize that tumors are present, allowing breast cancer to grow unchecked by the immune system.

The researchers found that women who have long been consuming more than 10 mg isoflavones daily are at reduced risk of breast cancer recurrence, compared with women who consume less than 4 mg isoflavones daily. "One cup of soymilk has about 30 mg isoflavones, the majority of which is genistein."
